Colorado Radio for Justice is made up of a small but mighty team… and we’re excited to be inviting new collaborators! Below, you’ll find job descriptions, and links to applications, for the following roles:
Senior Operations Manager
Community Music Show DJs (seeking up to 15)
Studio Management Associates (seeking 2 to 3)
Associate Producers for our podcasts and social media (seeking 2 to 4)
All roles require availability to work in person in Denver, although some roles do include the possibility of hybrid work. Currently, all CRJ teammates work on a part-time hourly basis or on a project basis. As we continue to grow, we intend to establish full-time roles.

Senior Operations Manager

The Senior Operations Manager (SOM) is a new role at CRJ. This person brings administrative prowess; experience facilitating from a critical liberatory perspective; people-and-culture savvy; and an overall interest in and care for the mission and future of CRJ. The SOM’s core responsibilities are not in media production, although this person may occasionally join our producers on our airwaves, and candidates who bring skills and experiences as media producers / storytellers are encouraged to apply. The SOM is not required to bring direct lived experience in the criminal-legal system, but again, qualified candidates with lived experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
Key responsibilities:
Managing CRJ team operations, including overseeing the calendars for space use, production, and curriculum/pedaogy development
Refining and managing CRJ’s information/data systems and infrastructure, including Google Drive and Radio.co, our broadcast management platform
Overseeing a team that manages CRJ’s studio space(s)
Supporting system-impacted audio and video producers
With the General Manager, overseeing a team who executes social media strategic plans
Collaborating on communications and relationship-building with CRJ’s partners and media guests
With the General Manager, interfacing with Colorado Department of Corrections leadership in the management of CRJ’s program in prisons
With the General Manager, financial management and budgeting
Facilitating or co-facilitating CRJ internal and external workshops and professional development, including topics like mission and vision alignment; media literacy; community engagement; strategic planning; and more
Occasional representation of CRJ at events and with key external stakeholders
Required qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
3 years or more experience in one or more of the following: program administration, nonprofit leadership, information systems, and/or operations
Experience and facility with Google Suite
Past experience facilitating groups
An evolving understanding of and interest in critical pedagogy, restorative and transformative justice, and systems change
An unflappable spirit of possibility and persistence in the face of systemic barriers
Additional useful qualifications:
Experience and relationships in Denver and Colorado nonprofit sectors, arts, media, and education
Past experience with social media platforms and strategies
Past experience with some or all of the tools CRJ uses for audio and/or video production, including Transistor, Descript, Rodecaster sound boards, and/or audio production, including the DAW Reaper
Lived experience in the criminal-legal system. This is beneficial, but not required, for this role. All of CRJ’s media work is led or co-led by people directly impacted by the criminal-legal system; we define “directly impacted” as people who have experienced incarceration or detention, or immediate family members of people who have been incarcerated or detained.
Schedule:
20-30 hrs per week; 2 days per week minimum (4 hours per day minimum) on-site at the CRJ studios in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood

Community Music Show DJs

CRJ Music Show DJs are on-air personalities who bring a unique combination of traits: an interest in storytelling; a passion for music; lived experience in the criminal-legal system; and a love of good old-fashioned community radio. They’re enthusiastic about the mission and vision of CRJ, and they bring respect for the ethics and standards on our airwaves.
In October, CRJ is preparing to launch a Storefront Studio at 2260 East Colfax Avenue. The Storefront Studio will be in operation Nov 2 through Dec 31. These DJs will activate the studio beginning the first week of November, hosting live music shows broadcast on our CRJ app and on our web stream.
This application process includes 2 parts:
Complete the Community DJ Application, linked above
If invited, complete three 2-hour training sessions in late October. Details about these training sessions are in the Community DJ Application. All applicants will be paid $20/hr for their training time. Applicants who complete the training will be eligible for DJ roles. Note: these broadcast trainings will begin the weekend of Oct 17-18. Please find that calendar in the Application link above, and go ahead and reserve the dates and times in your calendar, as you submit your application.
Key responsibilities - Music Show DJ:
Host 3 to 18 hours of live music shows per week (minimum of one weekly show/shift)
Follow CRJ’s broadcasting standards and ethical guidelines
Activate the studio with community guests, when possible
Promote each airshift with minimum of one post on personal social media account(s)
Required qualifications:
Lived experience in the criminal-legal system. All of CRJ’s media work is led or co-led by people directly impacted by the criminal-legal system; we define “directly impacted” as people who have experienced incarceration or detention, or immediate family members of people who have been incarcerated or detained.
Ability to speak in English
Ability to learn and navigate a soundboard and audio software system, using a Mac computer
An interest and willingness to share personal stories and perspectives, in line with CRJ’s ethos and mission
An interest and willingness to curate music selections, potentially including genres that are not typically personal preference
Comfort navigating and overcoming occasional inevitable hurdles or hiccups in a live studio setting
Preferred qualifications:
Fluency in a second language
Experience with broadcasting and audio production
Experience in and knowledge of some music genre(s) and artist(s)
Schedule:
3-18 hrs per week in the CRJ studio on Colfax Avenue; this may include unique hours such as early mornings, late nights, and weekends.

In October, CRJ is preparing to launch a Storefront Studio at 2260 East Colfax Avenue. The Storefront Studio will be in operation Nov 2 through Dec 31. The Studio Management Associates get to be a part of this exciting new adventure: along with the CRJ General Manager, they will keep the space active and welcoming, and will support our community DJs and our other in-studio programming, all happening live on our CRJ app and on our web stream.
CRJ Studio Management Associates are like multiple identities rolled into one: technical wiz, restaurant server, executive administrator, and companionable colleague. They’re punctual, reliable, responsive, optimistic, and unfazed by the inevitable technical difficulties that sometimes arise in a live studio setting. They’re enthusiastic about the chance to play a leadership role in a new, high-visibility broadcast studio in Denver.

Key responsibilities - Studio Management Associate:
Host / manage the studio space on Colfax Avenue, 9 to 25 hours per week (minimum of three 3-hour shifts per week). The studio will be activated up to 6am to midnight daily, so Studio Managers shifts will happen within those time frames.
Keep a proactive line of communication with the General Manager and other Studio Management Associates
When possible, respond to studio-related questions via text from DJs, when outside of your scheduled shift
Monitor CRJ’s broadcasting standards and ethical guidelines
During each shift, promote what’s happening in the studio with a minimum of one post on CRJ’s social media account(s)
During shifts, sustain proactive communication and connection with CRJ’s neighbors on Colfax Ave, Convict Coffee and R&R Head Labs (in other words, go buy a coffee and get a haircut!)
Required qualifications:
2 years or more experience in audio production, engineering, etc, including facility with working with hardware including mics, XLR cables, and sound boards
Facility with Mac computers and with Google Suite
Familiarity with, or a willingness to quickly learn, CRJ’s audio tools: Rodecaster sound board; the DAW Reaper; Radio.co
Past experience with social media platforms and strategies
Rigorous and consistent organization and communication practices
An independent spirit, with a drive to work through the occasional inevitable hurdles or hiccups in a live studio setting
Ability to speak in English
Preferred qualifications:
An interest and willingness to curate music selections, potentially including genres that are not typically personal preference
An interest and willingness to engage in audio production, to support CRJ production during Studio Management shifts
Lived experience in the criminal-legal system. This is beneficial, but not required, for this role. All of CRJ’s media work is led or co-led by people directly impacted by the criminal-legal system; we define “directly impacted” as people who have experienced incarceration or detention, or immediate family members of people who have been incarcerated or detained.
Schedule:
9-25 hrs per week in the CRJ studio on Colfax Avenue. This schedule will be built around your availablity and the DJ shift schedules, in the time range of 6am to midnight each day.

Trainings begin the weekend of Oct 17-18. Full Studio Management calendar begins Nov 1.
Compensation:
$22 / hr.
Associate Producers - Podcasts & Social Media

CRJ is seeking Associate Producers to collaborate in the production of our 4 ongoing original podcasts for audio and video; our occasional special documentary series; and our social media campaigns. This is an opportunity to be part of CRJ’s award-winning, mission-driven storytelling, and to support system-impacted people and positive systemic changes.
CRJ Associate Producers will each produce 1 to 4 episodes per month, mutually agreed upon as projects arise. They will bring skills in audio and/or video production; social media savvy; impeccable rigor and standard of quality; and a balance of following expectations of form with challenging and questioning the status quo. If you know what LUFS are, and if you tend to find yourself late at night spending an extra five minutes moving a single audio or video clip in a project so that it hits juuuuuust right… then this role might just be for you. CRJ APs also enjoy sharing their knowledge; collaborating on offering tips and training to our system-impacted producers, both formally and informally, is an important part of this role. Finally, CRJ APs work well independently and are rigorous, responsible, and communicative. They always meet the deadline, and if lightning strikes one day and they cannot, then they communicate proactively about it.

Key responsibilities - CRJ Associate Producer:
Edit, mix, master, and post CRJ podcast episodes, as assigned (approximately 1 to 4 episodes per month, as mutually agreed upon)
Create and post social media assets related to / promoting podcast episodes, as assigned
When possible, serve as recording engineer for podcast interviews, as assigned
When possible, provide coaching and mentorship to other CRJ Producers and Featured hosts.
Follow CRJ file naming standards, and file organization in Google Drive, to the letter
Listen for, and adhere to, CRJ’s ethical and journalistic standards
Follow, and contribute to the evolution of, CRJ’s style guide for social media
Keep a proactive line of communication with the General Manager, Senior Producers, and Featured Hosts
Required qualifications:
2 years or more experience in audio and/or video production, engineering, editing, and more
Facility with Mac computers and with Google Suite
Familiarity with, or a willingness to quickly learn, CRJ’s audio tools: Rodecaster sound board; the DAW Reaper; Transistor; Descript
Experience and comfort with social media platforms and strategies
Rigorous and consistent organization and communication practices
Ability to speak and write in English
Preferred qualifications:
Facility with tools and practices of live recording, in-studio and in the field, including mics, XLR cables, and sound boards
A journalistic ear and eye, gauging and helping guide CRJ’s reporting as an editor and copywriter
Lived experience in the criminal-legal system. This is beneficial, but not required, for this role. All of CRJ’s media work is led or co-led by people directly impacted by the criminal-legal system; we define “directly impacted” as people who have experienced incarceration or detention, or immediate family members of people who have been incarcerated or detained.
Schedule:
Flexible. Each Associate Producer will take on 1 to 4 podcast episodes per month, as mutually agreed upon, and will follow a detailed production calendar accordingly. Associate Producers may work primarily remote, but need to be available to come t the CRJ studio on a mutually agreeable schedule when necessary.
Start date:
Nov 1.
Compensation:
$50 and up. Producing a podcast episode is compensated at $50 for a short, audio-only project; the fee increases for longer projects and/or for podcasts that include video. A fee schedule will be provided to accepted Producers, and will be confirmed for each project. Producers will be invited to submit an invoice for payment on the first of each month, for the previous month’s projects.
