PARENTING & PRISON

A Conversation & Listening Party

produced & hosted by Colorado Radio for Justice

at the High Walls Summit at Redline Contemporary Art Center

August 17, 2025

“Even if I was gonna lose my life inside prison, I still wanted to have a relationship with my son.”

Those are some of the powerful reflections shared by CRJ Co-Director Herbert Alexander in our Conversation & Listening Party earlier this month, “PARENTING & PRISON,” at Redline Contemporary Arts Center, as part of the High Walls Summit, produced by Impact Arts.

Herbert shared audio from his award-winning, deeply personal audio documentary work, “Incarcerated Dads.” He also talked about how different his life looks now that he’s free and navigating the joys and challenges of everyday parenting.

Pam Clifton, from Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition, and Kalena Rodriguez, from Unbreakable Ministries & Built to Recover, joined Herbert on the panel. They shared moving personal testimonies about navigating parenting within, and sometimes in spite of, the system. The packed gallery listened to Pam’s son’s spoken-word poem about growing up without his mom; Kalena read her son’s letter which is published in Pam’s book, “Tell Them You Love Them: A Resource Guide for Incarcerated Parents.”

The Conversation & Listening Party was moderated by CRJ associate Lucy Richardson.

Colorado Radio for Justice

at the ColoRadio Speaker Series

Friday, February 21, 2025

6:30-8pm | FREE | Register here

Denver Press Club: 1330 Glenarm Place, Denver, CO 80204

Colorado Radio for Justice is excited to be the first speaker in a new series at Denver Press Club, hosted and curated by the audio collective ColoRadio. Our past, present, and future work will be shared by our team: Herbert Alexander, Ryan Conarro, Tiffany McCoy, and Seth Ready.

ColoRadio says: Join us for our first event at the Denver Press Club. Our first guests are the team behind Colorado Radio for Justice, a new 24/7 streaming radio station by and for formerly incarcerated Coloradans.

Colorado Radio for Justice emerges from the work of Inside Wire: Colorado Prison Radio, which for two years broadcast news, music and information to prisons all over the state and beyond. The CRJ team will join journalist Ann Marie Awad for a conversation about creating radio in an unexpected place and collaborating with people at different stages of the criminal justice system.
